BUNGA KEKWA (Chrysanthemum)

Bunga Kekwa yang dibeli October 2017 dari Kundasang. Bought 2 pots, each white and yellow.
Sadly, only yellow survived. As for the white one, it was growing nicely until the day I moved it a different area and snails attacked it without mercy.

Another name for it is Chrysanthemums, or in short, we called it mums.

Chrysanthemums come from Greek word "Chrys" meaning golden (the color of the original flowers), and "anthemon" meaning flower.

Chrysanthemums blooms come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes and in a wide range of colors. I was lucky to get this large flower size variety in 1 beautiful colors, white and yellow.

Surely, now that I know better on how to care for it, I will hunt for the rest of the colors available; purple and red, also I am certainly getting back the white color.

Mums flower symbolizes fidelity, optimism, joy and life.

Red : conveys love
White : symbolizes truth and loyal love
Yellow : symbolizes slighted love

This type of Kekwa has a larger flower compare the other variety. Mums flower head is actually a cluster of many flowers. They are categories into 9 types according to type and arrangement of disk and ray of flowers;
  • Incurved
  • Reflexed
  • Intermediate
  • Late Flowering Anemones
  • Singles
  • Pompons
  • Sprays
  • Spiders/Spoon/Quills
  • Charms
  • Cascades

When I bought this flower, and as usual I wasn't excited sharing it with the world, and the first response I got was, "this flower won't last long because it needs a cold area to grow them", well back then, I just keep quiet and keep going with my plant. And look who is having the beautiful yellow flower at the front yard?

The facts stated that mums are tropical flowers, were originally grown in the Eurasian region.

Well suited for container gardening in patios.

Chrysanthemum flavoured tea is very popular and is used as a relaxant.

Bloom all year, can be propagated by devision of roots, cuttings and seeds.
Seedlings can be transplanted after about a month of sowing.
Usualy flower approx 3 months after sowing, and the flower have a long flowering period.

Mums' Caring Tips

Pinching technique is to be used in order to make them bushy.

Fertilising
- Important to feed fertilizer when the plant is ready for blooming and STOP after flower buds are formed.

The faded blooms should be removed regularly as it helps prolong the flowering

Mums are susceptible to aphids & plant bugs, leafspot & stunt, and foliar nematodes.

This is my mums' propagation using the cutting method, I did 2 pot 2 days ago (19th Jan 2018). Today check on them, they look good.

Hope it will grow beautifully. We shall come back after 3 months to see if this is a success. March 20th - check date
